There are a lot of great people and organisations that I’ve featured, that apply the concept of ‘upcycling’ plastic bags to create very original designs and produce a totally ‘new’ bag. Rooikop however, stands out as one of the most original and funky. You just have to take a look at their fashion shoot, to know they understand design.
With a passion for design, fashion and the planet, Rooikop was started in 2009 by redhead Zoe Willems. Rooikop (literally "redhead") is now an eco design company creating a range of quirky fashion accessories using upcycled plastic material. Using plastic that they save from various landfills, Rooikop cleans, manipulates and adds plush padding to create bags that are beautifully crafted and seriously funky. Each bag contains at least 16 plastic shopping bags and made by hand.
Rooikop’s range of sustainable products extends their belief of “good for goodness sake”, Rooikop works with local communities outside Johannesburg to empower people by teaching them the skills needed to make Rooikop’s designs.
Funky, sustainable, community-orientated and African – totally fits our headspace!
